Joy and Anger

Sun Jan 18, 2009, 4:51 AM
What a great way to start a new year: I just got my second Daily Deviation, for my B&W bodyscape “Reclining”. I almost fell of my chair when I logged in to dA and saw all the messages! I am so overwhelmed and excited, so a big huge thank you to everyone for your support, and to ^wynnesome for featuring it. This totally just made my year, and is a major motivation to pick up the camera as soon as possible and start working on more material, after my 2007-2008 hiatus.

On a less joyous note, I just read something in the newspaper that made me pretty angry. I think it is not a mystery to anyone that there is a finance crisis going on everywhere in the world, the US are badly shaken, and so is Europe. I guess the rest of the world is not better off. I live in Luxemburg, we have a total population of 500,000 people, half a million, so we’re one of the smallest countries in the world (if you don’t know where, look for a tiny speck between France and Germany).

Our brilliant government (Michael Moore would love to make a movie about them) decided to shell out 2.5 billion Euros to save the Dexia Bank when it was on the verge of going belly-up. 2.5 billion, that is € 5000 for every single living person in our country, newborns and elderly people included. Quite a sum, but hey, if it is necessary to save the world, we will gladly swallow the bitter pill and pretend everything is fine.

But then I read this morning, that 200 top managers of said Dexia Bank were “caught” partying in Monaco, for the “small” sum of 400.000 Euros. And they were heard uttering toasts “to those who lost all their money”. WTF? Spending half a million on a party when they nearly caused their bank to go bankrupt is bad enough, but then mocking those who lost everything AND us others whose tax money served to save their sorry asses, I am at a loss of words.
